A big celebration for better children’s rights in Prey Veng 1 July-2013
Prey Veng – 300 people gathered on the first of June in order to celebrate the International Children’s Rights Day in the centre for street children in Damnok Toek.
The main objective of this special event was to raise awareness about children’s rights to education and protection in Cambodia among parents, school children, community members and local authorities.
Attending the launch of the event with a lecture of the UN Children’s Rights Charta by centre director Ear, were school children, parents, teachers and local authorities. During the event, the representative of the local authorities expressed his deep respect for the work of the centre and stressed that the good collaboration should continue, if the community wanted to establish better children’s rights and ultimately abolish abuse and violence against children. The children certainly had fun during their day, playing and enjoying all activities organised by the centre in collaboration with AEA.
“This event is of upmost importance for the inhabitants of Damnok Toek. Often people here are not interested in children’s rights. I will however try to work with associations to improve the current situation”, said the representative of the local authorities. Adding to these ideas, Mr Ear mentioned that he is glad to see that people in Damnok Toek are changing their attitude and becoming more aware of children’s rights.
Considering the importance of the event, AEA has collaborated with multiple partners organising similar events in other places all over Cambodia.
